How many hours do you usually sleep every day?

These days, I do not sleep much. Most often, I sleep for only 6 or 7 hours. If I sleep more than that, it takes even more time to feel awake.

How was your sleep when you were younger?

As a teenager, I used to sleep a lot more. It was really difficult to get up early, especially when I had to go to school.

Do you usually read before going to bed? Why?

Yes, I always do so. Reading before bedtime helps me sleep more quickly. In addition, I have heard that it is easier to learn new things if we sleep right after we read.

How important is it to help others?

I believe that helping each other is critical to building decent relationships. Nobody is good enough to do everything alone. 

Did your parents teach you to help others?

My parents have taught me that being helpful to other people is not only good for them, but also for me. According to them, there is no better way of gaining the sympathy of other people.

When was the last time you received help?

A few days ago, I had a problem with my computer. It slowed down a lot and I did not know what to do. I asked my cousin to have a look at it, and he worked out the problem by re-installing the operating system.

What kind of food do you enjoy eating?

I like to eat any type of food. But, my favorite ones are those prepared with meat. I cannot feel full without eating meat.

What are some kinds of food you never eat? Why?

There is nothing that I do not eat, yet I do not really like dishes that contain only vegetables. They never taste well.

Do you generally prefer to eat at home or at a restaurant? Why?

I would like to eat out all the time. But, it would be too expensive. So, I usually have to eat at home due to high cost of eating outside.

What are some reasons that people eat at restaurants?

I think, people prefer to eat outside on special occasions such as wedding anniversaries, birthdays. On such days, they do not want to waste time for cooking, and prefer to spend more time with each other.

Describe a popular food in your country. Why do you like this food?

ln my opinion, the most popular food in my country is İskender Kebap. It is prepared with meat, fried bread, yoghurt and butter sauce. I like to eat it because it tastes so delicious and is served pretty quickly.

What kind of place do you live in?

I live in an apartment located very close to the city center. It is just like any other apartment in the neighborhood. It has 3 rooms, a kitchen and a bathroom.

Do you think it’s better to live in a house or an apartment? Why?

I believe that it is much better to live in a house with a garden. Living in an apartment makes me feel depressed. Eating or resting for a while in a garden would be great for anyone.

Describe your neighborhood. Do you like it? Why or why not?

I cannot say that I like my neighborhood. It has got too much vehicle traffic and noise. But, I cannot afford to rent a better place.

How do people choose their place to live?

These days, most people cannot afford to live where they want. They just have to rent or buy a place up to their budget, and they usually pay the most attention to the distance from home to work or school.

How often do you make telephone calls? Why – why not?

I call people only when I need to discuss something urgently. I do not really like to talk on the phone. 

Who do you spend most time talking on the phone? Why?

I call my wife a lot more frequently than other people just because we usually have to discuss the details about our mutual responsibilities, such as shopping and payments. 

When do you think you will next make a telephone call? Why?

As soon as this interview finishes, I’m going to call my best friend to share my experiences about the test. 

Do you sometimes prefer to send a text message instead of telephoning? Why – why not?

I prefer to send text messages only when there is no response to my calls. Voice calls could be completed in a shorter amount of time. But, texting usually requires devoting more time to agree even on simple topics. I do not like wasting my time.

How popular are bicycles in your hometown? Why

In my hometown, there are not so many opportunities for bike riders. There are dedicated bike lanes only by the seaside in the city center. 

How often do you ride a bicycle? Why – why not?

I ride at least twice a week. It helps me unwind.

Do you think bicycles are suitable for all ages?

I believe that all people can ride bikes without having to spend much effort. It could be used as an opportunity to travel particular distances and as a means to keep fit.

What are the advantages of a bicycle compared to a car?

Biking improves health by increasing physical activity. Besides, it costs a lot less to own and maintain a bike.

Which part of your country do most people live in?

The majority of the population lives in the western part of the country because of more decent work opportunities. Most notably, İstanbul is home to one sixth of the whole population.

How easy is it to travel around your country?

Travelling around the west and south of Turkey is really easy. You can take either a bus or a plane to any city at any time of the day. However, it is not the same case for cities located in the other parts.

Has your country changed much since you were a child?

I cannot say that Turkey has changed much in the last few decades. The only difference I have noticed is the rapidly growing number of people and buildings.

What’s your favourite colour? Why?

I don’t think that I have a favourite colour. As a man, I just refrain from using things that have bright colours since they are considered feminine by the community.

Do you like the same colours now as you did when you were younger? Why/Why not?

Due to my own stereotypes, I have always been interested in darker colours. Being a man in Turkey is associated with such colours.

What can you learn about a person from the colours they like?

Excepr for rare cases, I don’t think that we can learn much from the colour preference of people. But, a person obsessed with a particular colour would look irritating to me.

Do any colours have a special meaning in your culture?

I cannot say that I’m really good at the colour customs of my own country. All I know is that when babies are born, boys are dressed in blue, whereas pink is preferred for girls. On top of that, brides are always dressed entirely in white.

Do you prefer relaxing at home or going out in the evening? Why?

After exhausting work days, I would only like to go home and rest. But, if I feel energetic and the weather is nice, spending an evening out looks like the best option to me.

When you go out for an evening, what do you like to do?

Going out in the evenings means having a dinner and a few drinks with my family to me. I also like to have a walk by the seaside, especially in summers. Where I live, it is the best chance to cool down.

How popular is this with other people in your country?

This is pretty much the same for almost all people over the age of 30 in Turkey.

Is there any kind of entertainment you do not like? Why/Why not?

I pay attention to not being in crowded and loud places. I just don’t feel comfortable around people who are dying to do crazy things.

How important are clothes and fashion to you? Why/Why not?

I don’t care much about the clothes I wear. I have many clothes that look similar to each other. This way, I do not spend much time thinking what to wear.

What kind of clothes do you dislike? Why?

I have never liked to wear tight clothes. I cannot feel comfortable with them. I also do not like to wear clothes that have many different colours on it.

How different are the clothes you wear now from those you wore 10 years ago?

Ten years ago, I used to wear casual clothes more often. However, they have been replaced with formal ones since graduation from university.

What do you think the clothes we wear say about us?

I believe that the choice of clothes may reflect the psychological state of the owner to a certain extent. For example, if someone is always dressed in work clothes, it can be concluded that he wants to be valued primarily by his work. 

Do you enjoy dancing? Why/Why not?

I have tried to dance a few times before, but each time I have felt too embarrassed. I know that I have absolutely no talent for dancing, and because of that I just cannot enjoy it.

Has anyone ever taught you to dance? Why/Why not?

There was no one to teach me how to dance. I grew up as the only child. My family was not interested in dancing, either. And I do not think that it is necessary to teach it. It can be learnt alone.

Tell me about any traditional dancing in your country.

There are many different cultures in my country, and each one has its own dancing style. For example, while the ones in the North East have quite fast rhythms, the ones in the East are relatively slower.

Do you think that traditional dancing will be popular in the future? Why/Why not?

I believe that traditional dances will neither be too popular nor be forgotten. Their popularity will remain the same as now.

Which instrument do you like listening to most? Why?

I cannot name a particular instrument that I like more than the others. When the song feels nice, I just listen to it. I do not really care about the instruments used in the song.

Have you ever learned to play a musical instrument? Which one?

At secondary school, we were supposed to play the flute. We had lessons twice a week. It was not really difficult to play it, but I think we only achieved basic mastery. 

Do you think children should learn to play a musical instrument at school? Why/Why not?

I definitely think so. It is very well known that learning to play a musical instrument contributes greatly to the intelligence of the kids.

How easy would it be to learn to play an instrument without a teacher? Why?

I believe that anyone can learn to play an instrument by themselves. However, it is clear that any instrument can be mastered much faster with a teacher.

How do most people travel to work where you live?

For those without a private car, there are 2 options: they either take a bus or the subway. 

How do you usually travel to work or college? Why?

I prefer to take the subway to go to work as it takes significantly less time. It is great not to waste any time.

Have you always travelled to work or college in the same way? Why?

The way I go to work has always been the same; I always take the subway. Even if I had a car, I would still do the same because there is too much traffic in the city.

What do you like about travelling to college or work this way?

What I most like about going to work by subway is that it takes much less time compared to buses or private cars.

What traffic problems are there in your area? Why?

This city was founded many years ago according to the day’s population. Back then, there were not so many cars on roads, and they were built accordingly. Thus, today the traffic gets stuck all around the city. 

What changes would improve the way you travel to work or college? Why?

I don’t think any further improvements are necessary. I only walk for 2 minutes to take the subway and go where I want.

How do traffic problems affect you?

The traffic problems have no particular effects on me. I take the subway to refrain from them.

How would you reduce the traffic problems in your area?

I believe that the current situation cannot be improved without drastic applications such as destroying half the city to widen the roads or forcing some people to live somewhere else. 

Do you prefer to have one particular friend or a group of friends? Why?

I prefer to have only a few friends. When there are too many of them, it gets impossible to have a profound relationship. 

What do you like doing most with your friend/s?

As a person that likes solitude, I like to have friends only when we have common hobbies or goals. 

Do you think it’s important to keep in contact with friends you knew as a child? Why/Why not?

I like to be in touch with people I like. It does not matter whether I met them during childhood or later in life. 

What makes a friend into a good friend?

In my opinion, a good friend is someone who you have a lot things to share with. These range from common hobbies to a similar understanding of life. For example, I cannot be friends with someone who do not value what I care about.

What kind of things make you laugh?

Honestly, I have no idea about what makes me laugh. I sometimes like to laugh at the awkward behaviours of people, yet at other times it seems inappropriate to do so.

Do you like making other people laugh? Why/Why not?

I really like it when other people laugh at my jokes, even though I’m not really good at it. The ultimate goal of people is to be happy or feel nice, and laughing is one of the best expressions of happiness. 

Do you think it’s important for other people to laugh? Why/Why not?

Of course it is. Laughing helps people release hormones that trigger happiness. 

Is laughing the same as feeling happy, do you think? Why/Why not?

Laughing is just a sign of happiness. People can still be happy without laughing. For example, you can be happy getting a promotion at work, but I don’t think laughing will be the first reaction at such a moment.

How you ever been in cold weather? When?

I got my university education 10 years ago in one of the coldest cities in Turkey. The average winter temperature could reach -10 degrees. 

How often is the weather cold where you come from?

Where I live, the weather is mostly sunny, even in winters. It last snowed many years ago.

Are some parts of your country colder than others? Why?

The eastern part of Turkey is significantly colder than the rest because of the mountainous terrain. 

Would you prefer to live in a hot place or a cold place? Why?

Unlike most people, I would like to live in a cold place. I feel too weak when the weather is too hot. But, in cold weather I feel surprisingly well.

How well do you know the people that live next door to you?

I don’t know who they are at all. Even though it has been two years since I moved to my current house, we haven’t met yet.

How often do you see them? Why/Why not?

I rarely see them. We just come across each other from time to time when we are about to enter our apartments.

What kinds of problem do people sometimes have with their neighbours?

As far as I know, neighbours usually quarrel about loud noise. I do not know any other reason that may cause tension between them. I have never had any problems with mine.

How do you think neighbours can help each other?

I cannot think of a way besides socializing with each other. Neighbours live very close to each other and they have the chance to visit each other as often as possible.

Which magazines and newspapers do you read? Why?

I like to read magazines and newspapers that have international coverage. I have always been curious about what’s happening all around the world.

What kinds of article are you most interested in? Why?

I read articles about recent scientific developments and international news with great pleasure. I have the hunger to learn about new things.

Have you ever read a newspaper or magazine in a foreign language? When/Why?

I read magazines and newspapers in English most of the time. It helps me improve my vocabulary.  

Do you think reading a newspaper or magazine in a foreign language is a good way to learn the language? Why?

I think it is one of the best ways to learn a language. Being able to see the natural usage of the language is a great chance for all learners. 

Do you like to have flowers in your home? Why/Why not?

We have very few flowers at home. It would be great to have many of them, but in my opinion it is too hard to look after them.

Where would you go to buy flowers? Why?

There are many flower stores located all around the city. Even though I do not know the exact location of any, it takes only a few minutes of walk to find one. 

On what occasions would you give someone flowers?

I occasionally buy flowers only for my wife and my mother, but I cannot say that I do this in particular days. 

Are flowers important in your culture? Why/Why not?

As far as I know, flowers were very important in our culture. Many types of flowers were associated with particular feelings. But, I do not think that it is the case anymore.

How often do you watch television? Why/Why not?

I have almost never watched TV since the internet speed on mobile phones became good enough to watch videos. I used to watch TV for news, movies or series for 1-2 hours in the past. 

Which television channel do you usually watch? Why?

I sometimes like watching the political talks regardless of the channels. I find it interesting when people from opposing views share their opinions.

Do you enjoy the advertisements on television? Why/Why not?

I hate advertisements since they always pop up in the most interesting moments of movies or series.

Do you think most programmes on television are good? Why/Why not?

I think that the majority of them do not appeal to me at all. For example, nearly all Turkish TV series include two lovers that experience difficulties in their relationship. 

What games are popular in your country? Why?

Card games of almost all types and backgammon are very popular in Turkey. I think people prefer them over the others because they are really easy to learn.

Do you play any games? Why/Why not?

The only game I play is chess. I find it really enjoyable even though I have to spend much mental effort.

How do people learn to play games in your country?

The way people learn to play games differ according to the goals of the individual. Those who have professional goals usually join clubs or get private coaching to master the game. But, the others simply play more to master the game.

Do you think it’s important for people to play games in your country? Why/Why not?

I believe that playing games is a great opportunity for anybody to maintain both physical and mental health. 

When do people give gifts or presents in your country?

There are several occasions when people give presents or gifts in my country such as the birth of babies, marriages, birthdays and visits to the house.

Do you ever take a gift when you visit someone in their home? Why/Why not?

Yes, I do. The first time you visit someone’s house, you are supposed to buy something that can be used in the house. Yet, after the initial visit, people prefer to buy edible things or beverages.

When did you last receive a gift? What was it?

The last time I received a gift was my birthday. My wife bought me two pairs of jeans, thinking that I have few casual clothes.

Do you enjoy looking for gifts for people? Why/Why not?

It depends on whether you know what to buy or not. It is pretty easy to choose a present for someone if you know what he / she likes.  But, the opposite could be a torture.

How do you usually contact your friends? Why?

Most of the time, we either meet somewhere, or we just have a telephone talk. I may also use instant messaging services from time to time, but this is not my favourite method.

Do you prefer to contact different people in different ways? Why?

I definitely have different ways to contact different people. For example, I prefer to visit people I love most, while I may just have a telephone call with the others.

Do you find it easy to keep in contact with friends and family? Why/Why not?

It is getting easier to be in contact with either friends or family thanks to developments in transportation and communication technology. For example, my parents live almost 600 kms away from me, but it takes only a little more than hour by plane to get to them. 

In your country, did people in the past keep in contact the same ways as they do today? Why/Why not?

As the technology has evolved, the way people contact with each other has also changed. For example, the only way to contact with someone that lived too far away was either by writing letters or telephoning. However, in today’s world, you can instantly start a video call with anyone regardless of the location.
